Moving Mountains was created to help the children and
their families that live in the trash mountains in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The poverty level there is very high and the landfills are the only
place where some of them can find food. Last Christmas we were able
to do a fundraiser to raise money and we were able to feed some of them
for Christmas Eve. A lot of them live at these landfills or trash
mountains which is what they call them. A lot of the children that live there
are orphans and others have lived there all their lives and all they
own they must carry on them at all times for fear of someone stealing it.
This
is why we have started this project. To make these bags for them to carry their
things. When they are delivered we hope to fill the bags with
clothes, some food and essentials to help them. We may not be able to give
them a home or food for all their lives but we can offer them this.
Something that is theirs. We thank all of you for all your help and your
support.

Hi Sarah! This is Jacquie Six from Kempsville ward. I have a question about this project. When cutting out the material for the bag and straps, do you cut on the grain or what? I'm a simple sewer but I remember having to place arrows on fabric for the grain. We have been looking for service projects for our RS and this might just fit the bill. I am probably coming out to Utah for General Conference and could bring them at that time if we do it. Great idea!!
ReplyDeleteHey!! Cutting on the grain doesn't matter so much. Because the type of fabric used for this project shouldn't have stretch in either direction. You want something really durable and sturdy. And since I suggest using recycled fabric from a thrift store, it's mostly hard to tell which way the grain goes. Just make sure you wash the fabric :) And April is just enough time! Thank you so much!!! Let me know if you have any more questions :)
